    Hennessy Underpad

I tried using a Hennessy underpad this weekend on the AT in Pennsylvania. Temps dropped 40 degrees after a severe thunderstorm. I also used a Dutchware winter sock and EE Revelation TQ with my Hennessy Asym Expedition. First problem was not taking my 12 ft. tarp and using the stock tarp to save weight. Winds picked up and the stock tarp was virtually useless. Second problem was the gaps left by the underpad. I ended up getting up around 2 a.m. and putting the underpad under me inside the hammock. Still froze my *** off and wished I had brought my DIY UQ instead. And finally the stuff sack for the underpad ripped. Just bought it. Ugh.

At least you've had a lesson learned experience. In February always take your best winter gear and if it's too warm no harm done other than maybe a we bit more sore back. But that back would have been so rested if you had the warmer gear it would probably worked out much better.

Well said. I was experimenting and paid for it.

That sort of experimenting should be done in the backyard....ideally.
I would never take the Hennessey pad below 50* and would not even use it in conjunction with other insulation. Use your UQ all the time and if it is not enough for the temps build another to suit.
12' tarp all the time unless your absolute there will be no weather/wind.

    Continue forth with the testing

was it the radiant one? if it was the foam one with the SS you can add your spare clothes or jacket under it to boost it. but I'm guessing it was the radiant pad

Foam. I was using a winter sock with it. Should have tried putting something between the pad and my hammock.

Well, this answered some of my questions from when I owned a Hennessy. Had to swallow my pride and go back to an ENO but it helped me afford a down underquilt.

I used the complete super shelter system (undercover, underpad and recommended space blanket) this weekend down to 26*. The underpad is part of a system, not an individual item like an underquilt.

Yes, you're absolutely right. I thought I could use it with a Dutchware winter sock but it didn't work well. I just bought a Outdoor Vitals Aerie sleep system. I like its versatility. I'll be testing it on the AT in PA this weekend.
