    One Night Loop @ Harper's Ferry, WV 3/3 - 3/4

I'm looking to do a short 1 night loop at Harpers Ferry, WV this coming weekend (prefer around 5-8 miles total)- I'll be arriving in the area after work this Friday around 7pm - so I'd like to get to camp within the first mile if possible. Anybody have any ideas on parking, water sources, potential hanging sites? I've never hiked this area, and would like to hear some of your suggestions.. Thanks in advance

If you do a web search for "Appalachian Trail Interactive Map" you'll get a map that has multiple overlays, including parking areas and shelters.

If you park at the bottom of Weverton, it's only about 2 miles to the Ed Garvey shelter from there. Lots of good hang spots off to the left of the shelter (left of, as in when you're approaching the shelter). The hike down to the water source isn't short, but not that bad.

It's no loop though. The next shelter would be Crampton Gap, right after you pass through Gathland. Weverton is just north of Harpers Ferry though. I haven't done much right around HF or south of it, I usually go north.

I decided we're taking 2 cars, (not a loop) and hiking from Route 9 Parking @ Keys Gap to Weverton Parking Lot. We're starting tonight around 6, and maybe hike a mile or so till we hopefully find something promising, (haven't converted my cousin yet to the hammock). And then tomorrow, hike to Harpers Ferry and continue to Weverton. Excited as this is my first trip for the year, and that I'll be on the AT - something that I've been wanting to do for a while.

Thanks again for ALL of your responses -- much appreciated!!

Cool man, I hope you guys had fun. That's a really easy section of trail, but still enjoyable. That Garvey shelter is insane. They really did a great job on it. Only bad part about it is that a lot of people decide they don't want to walk away from the shelter before taking a whizz, so the backside of the shelter under the deck always smells like urine. I've never stayed in it anyway, but dang... people are gross.

    Happy trails!
