    space blanket underquilt

out of pure curiosity i decided to make an underquilt out of a space blanket. i pulled the blanket into a hammock shape by just tying the two sides together with a nylon rope, then i used a presik knot to keep it tight against the hammock. i depart for my hanging slumber in a few hours and will continue to check on this thread if anyone has ideas.

current temp is 30, and it isn't supposed to get much lower. no precip, and i'm using a tarp as a "A" frame shelter.

Was the space blanket one of the thin noisey mylar refective ones or one of the heavier, thicker ones collored on one side? How did it do?

    hey all,

just noticed this post and coincidentally did the same thing last night. I used one of the thicker ones w/ the colored back. I attached in a similar fashion with the reflective side in. I can't speak for the exact temperature (no thermometer ), but the overnight low was 19 and I was toasty with the exception of 4 am. My bag is rated for 30* and I also used a fleece liner. I wore a pair of boarding pants and a fleece pull jacket; also used a hot water bottle, just to give you an idea of my setup

    Would definitely do again!

I have used one of those "all-weather reflective blanket" as part of a rig for my son. Here's the whole layout:
Single layer, no-name top loader hammock (it's in my gallery)
    NF Cats Meow sleeping bag
    3/8 ccf full length pad
    Blackcat tarp
T-shirt and boxer shorts to sleep in
reflective tarp rigged as an underquilt. (However, we needed another grommet in the middle of each end to cinch it up more tightly.)

He is a very warm sleeper (teenager that eats like a hummingbird!), but did say that he did not get cold at all and temps were down into the low 30's (F).

I think this makes an acceptable UQ/windbreak but would recommend adding some more small grommets at the head and foot end in order to better gather the material.

sorry i didn't reply sooner it's been busy around here. the space blanket worked, but not as well as i would hope, it was warmer than not having anything, but i'm still looking around for something to compare it to, next i'm going to try a down throw an ex gave me, it's not too long so there will be a lot uncovered by the blanket, but it should give me an idea. then after that i'll try a sleeping pad, which i expect to be the best. i'll post back later when i get a chance to sleep outside. lately it's been in the teens at night so i'd like it to warm up a little.
