September 2016. On the AT near Clingmans Dome. AT trail shelter in the background. Had a backcountry reservation only, and made sure my hammock wasn't attached to the shelter in any way. Was it legal? At the time didn't care. Had my hammock with me because I was planning on a couple other non-shelter backcountry camp sites and NOT staying at a shelter, but severe pain in my feet pretty much wiped out all plans I had. Stopped at the shelter out of necessity, not planned. And if a ranger stopped by to check I would have told them I could go to my permitted camp site but they would have to carry me there!
