I love "off season" camping on the AT. The NOBOs are moving through now, So Georgia and NC are getting busy, but parts of VA and up should still be relatively quiet.

In March of last year we did a piece into Damascus and saw no one else the whole weekend. Did Roan Mountain in October and once we got about 5 miles in (away from the parking area) we saw like 5 people the rest of the day. Scout troop at Doll Flats but that was all. Glad your trip worked out!

Don't understand, why is hanging near shelters slim? Not allowed or lack of trees?

Nothing not allowed. Plenty of trees, of course, but like most cleared areas, the trees near the shelter aren't great, or the spots aren't for various human reasons. Its different from shelter to shelter, but for instance, one I was at recently was on an incline such that it was not convenient to camp up or down from the shelter to have access to the shelter for cooking, etc., and nearby the area of the shelter was poor hanging at best. Possible, but poor.

I like having a table to sit at and cook, and a privy to use as needed, but neither are necessary. For sure not enough to pass up much better hanging spots on the trail somewhere. Now, I like people and all, but that can be a little hit or miss, too.
