Yeah, I really like the look of that locked Brummel. Just didn't know if the tapered end of the bury needed to be lock-stitched.

I like that stuff for all of my tie-outs.
But I was thinking of going the above-tarp ridgeline route. And putting prussik loops on that. I figure the prussiks can be Speer NoTangle. But the ridgeline will then have to be something thicker.

When using a locked brummel there's no need to stitch, which is why it's called a locked brummel. You would add lock stitches if you did a standard eye splice.

Acer, thanks for the clarification. I had thought the taper was to ease feeding the line but I was incorrect. I understand what you mean but my pee brain has trouble seeing how not tapering weakens it that much. Sure seems an eye spice with no taper would still be stronger than say a bowline. Anyway, I'll start tapering from now on. I'm wondering if anyone has actually had a line fail from not tapering (pics?). Maybe y'all do it the right way and have never had a failure. When I fall on my arse in the middle of the night then it'll sink in . Thanks man.

If you don't taper, the weakest point in the eye is where the standing line goes from double diameter down to single, and it will break there. It has something to do with uneven forces on individual strands or somesuch. I'm sure someone else can explain it better, but the point is, it's for strength that you taper, not ease of making.

Actually a bowline may derate the line more than a no taper bury but tapering is easy so it's worth the effort.

According to Samson Rope the weak spot in a whoopie sling is where the bury exits the tail and it's because there's no taper (because it's not possible there).

It is yar when applied neatly, but only on synthetic rope.

With organic fibers, one must use a traditional whipping.

2010...The year "yar" becomes a colloquialism that's not just used by mariners.
