Thanks, all, for the warm welcome and all the kind words. My 14 year old and I have been camping since he was 6 and backpacking since he was 11. He got a hammock for Christmas and is looking forward to his first hang. My youngest, 8, has been pushing me to go backpacking so this year is the year to get him out on the trails.

Thanks again for the information and entertainment on this forum.

Check out my video in the trip report section.

    Peace!

Welcome BD. I've got a 10 yr old and I plan on getting him a hammock by the time the weather breaks. I'm out on the Sheltowee all the time, and we will likely hit the Trace, and maybe the Gorge some this summer too. I live in Jackson county.

I agree about the Manitou Islands being great places to hike and see the stars. The entire Sleeping Bear National Lakeshore is a wonderful place to take the kids. Many campgrounds along the way.

I hiked the entire Lake Michigan shoreline last year. It's a wonderful lake and a great place to have an adventure.
