    Can you Fake a Cat-cut?

Can you fake a cat-cut on a tarp by pulling a "deeper" hem in the middle than at your corners? Would there then be a twist in your hem if you tried to roll in the extra material to keep the edge uniformly stitched?

And getting to the crux of the matter, is this any easier than just working out a curved cut?

Hemming like you're talking about would definitely cause wrinkles and therefore issues with the structure of the tarp. If you don't want to work out an actual catenary curve, you're still better off using an approximation like a parabola than over-rolling your hem.

Almost impossible to fake a cat... tried once, almost threw my hip out. What?!?

You can, but you still have to cut the fabric. Take something long and flexible like a piece of trim or something from Lowes/HomeDepot, find the middle of the panel you want the cat cut, then bend and trace. A good rule of thumb on depth is 4-6% of the length.
    Good luck,

You'll have a big problem trying to fake it by rolling the hem deeper in the curve. A straight line is shorter than a curve. As you roll the hem deeper to approximate the curve, you'll be pulling the corners in towards the center of the hem which will eliminate the very tautness that you're trying to achieve. It actually sounds like it would be more frustrating than an actual cat cut. To me.
