Very helpful! I saw one of these at REI the other day, but was in too much of a rush to climb in.
I had the Quarter Dome Air out for three nights this week and thought I would update this review.
Clearly the traps are too short for my part of the country. Four foot straps will not get around many of the trees in the Olympics. Fortunately I had taken a pair of six foot straps with me. I had to use them around one tree; one to hang the hammock and the other because the tarp line was too short. I haven't decided yet whether to continue to carry extensions or to replace the straps.
I did discover the shoulder squeeze that others have talked about, although it was not much of a problem for me. I seldom sleep on my back in bed, and when I do my arms are usually crossed on my chest. When I do that in the Quarter Dome there is no squeeze. It is only when my arms are by my side that I experience any squeeze on my torso. Sleeping on my side with my knees pulled up perpendicular to my body is the other time the hammock is constraining. I can do it, but definitely feel it.
My biggest problem with a gathered end hammock, whether the Blackbird or Traveller, is staying warm; I sleep cold. It seems like I always have CBS, no matter how I adjust the UQ, and keeping the UQ below my left shoulder and the TQ tucked is a constant struggle. With the Quarter Dome this has not been a problem. With a pair of 20 degree quilts I stayed warm in the upper 30's without the constant fiddling. That may not sound like much, but was a definite win for me.
The biggest concern that most expressed was in the tarp. It does not provide as much coverage as I would like. But I did make it through one very rainy night without any issue. I make sure I had the tarp well centered, touching the hammock before I got into it, and spread pretty wide. There was admittedly not a lot of wind that night, but I was pleased nonetheless. I set it up into porch mode that morning and was able to completely break camp from under the shelter of the tarp; going out into the rain only to take down the tarp and the tree straps. I was pleased.
I was able to use the hammock as a camp chair; almost as good as the Blackbird and much better than the Traveler. I liked the ability to flip the hammock over and get rid of the bug screen; also to fasten or remove the UQ. I also liked some of the quality touches like drip lines build into the hammock suspension just before the spreader bars and some extra loops on the tarp ridge line and outer edge. There are also four loops sewed into the ridge of the bug screen, but if you attach anything very heavy to them the bug screen sags quite a bit.
Overall I am still very happy with the Quarter Dome and it is definitely my new goto hammock.
I finally received my REI quarter dome after it being on backorder for close to a month. They gave me expedited shipping on it since it was on backorder I presume. But at any rate, I've not had the chance just yet to take it out overnight but it seems to be a good hammock. I currently use a dream hammock danger bird which I love, but I wanted to give a bridge hammock a try and this seemed like a cheap way to get into one. Im looking forward to my next overnighter so I can see how it works. Ive never been able to side sleep in a hammock and think I may enjoy it a lot.
