Hold your horses!! If you're making your own hammock, you may also consider making your own silnylon for a waterproof tarp! "In for a penny, in for a pound!"

I hear ya, and I like making a lot of my own stuff, but there's a point where I draw the line. The manufacturers can make silnylon WAY better than any of us could. I'm happy to pay a couple extra dollars per yard for something I'm sure will be waterproof, and probably lighter, than anything I could DIY.
I like making hammocks, and other equipment, because I can tailor them to meet my specific needs, or try a new design. That's where I'll spend my DIY time.

The "Search" function is your friend!
The ripstop I purchased from Joann's is waterproof (Black and grey) Black is my tarp. No drips through from the hose so far on mine. Might be the type my local Joann's sells.
I even put a large swatch in a bucket and poured water on top, no water came through and the ripstop did not soak up any water.
BTW don't bother asking the ladies there, they have no clue about ripstop.

I just got some black ripstop at my local Joann's as well. Sounds like the same stuff you got, though I haven't yet tested it with large amounts of water. I just take a bottle of water in with me and shake a few drops out on the fabric and see if they bead up and roll around.
Ditto on the employees. Clueless I can excuse , clueless and unhelpful means that when given an option I will be taking my business elsewhere.
A free canoe is better than no canoe.
The Joann's ripstop is also very heavy, up in the 1.9 oz range at least.

It's better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it.
Formerly known as Acercanto, my trail name is MacGuyver to some, and Pucker Factor to others.

Thanks for the coupon! I went to JoAnn's for hammock rip-stop but all they had was silnylon Going to make a cheap tarp for now!
Welcome to the forum Village
Silnylon is the short name for silicone impregnated ripstop nylon. Unless I am mistaken (and I surely could be) Silnylon is always ripstop. Now I am curious as to what you actually did find at Joannes?
There are all kinds of fabics you can find at Joannes for making a hammock, they do not necessarily have to be ripstop nylon. I have also found some waterproof stuff that would be suitable for a tarp but heavy to the point that it would be cheaper to just buy a Gear Guide tarp instead of making one from the material.
Good luck on your DIY adventure!
