Curious on how to cut straight edges on fabric

Title says it all. I made my bugnet last night out of tulle as my first diy experiment and it came out great. Not the prettiest and my edges were never cut straight which made sewing straight dort of difficult.

I don't see how to use a rotary mat when the fabric is 3 times bigger.

Any tips? Hoping to pic up more helpful tools today. Any recommendations are welcomed.

For smaller stuff I make plywood templates. I haven't done anything that big yet though!! Top quilt was the biggest so far and that was winging it.

Curious on how to cut straight edges on fabric

Straight edges are your friend... I actually use a laser line level. I like the ease in which I can layout a 90 degree angle..

I cut fabric on my garage floor with a hot knife..

I tape the fabric to my hardwood floors and use the joints as guides. For my UQ, I taped the fabric to the wall and projected a MS Excel spreadsheet on the fabric to get my lines.

If your fabric is folded in half lengthwise (fold again if your mat is small), lay the end on the mat and use a straight edge to run your rotary cutter along. Try to square it by placing a t-square or carpenter's steel square along the selvedge (long) edge. You do not have to be precise- sewing is not like woodworking or metal- but neatness does help. If you don't have a square a piece of paper will do. This technique works well for cutting narrow strips of netting for top quilt or underquilt baffles also.

I use a cutting mat and a rotary cutter. I fold the fabric and line it up with the grid on the mat.
    I sew things on youtube.
I don’t sew on commission, so please don’t ask. Thanks.

I use a big piece of cardboard as a mat, then use a aluminum yardstick, a framing square or a eight ft piece of aluminum u channel as a straightedge, and then cut with one of those cheap razor knives where you break the tip off for a new edge.

You could try a snap line with chalk like the carpenters, use for long lines the less chalk the better.

I use a wood burning tool, a very long straight edge (https://www.lowes.com/pd/Swanson-Too...-Edge/50438214) and a couple of long scraps of MDF (10 feet total) along with a bunch of clamps to hold the straigh edge to the MDF.

nice clean cuts that you dont need to heat seal. only down side is that you can only cut through 1 layer at a time
