    Watching the stars...

How would you all set up to fall asleep watching the stars in the winter season? Im thinking to just drape the tarp over my hammock ... but then, wouldnt condensation be a problem? And then also, what about the dew/frost problem on my nice expensive goose down quilt?

How about an Epic hammock sock? Would work for dew and light rain. saw some simi-clear waterproof fabric (mylar laminate I think) on a kite fabric site. you could have a window in your tarp

I'm making a wpb hammock sock just for that reason when I get around to it...have two prototypes but I think my next one will be the design I want. I think a good DWR would work just as well, esp in winter if it's sub-freezing. I love sleeping w/o a tarp so I can see the stars, but I wouldn't drape the tarp over me b/c of the condensation.

The JRB Weather Shield would probably be good for that purpose, too.

    Just Jeff

Did you ever make your hammock sock? If so, does a good DWR work without holding in condensation?

I saw a cool post where someone had sewn in a clear piece of plastic in the vapor liner on a clark hammock that would be perfect for stargazing and keep the elements off of a top quilt.

i will never forget gigging frogs at a farm pond around 02:00 in the morning and seeing a spectacular meteor shower...one of the very few things about hammock camping I dislike is being under the tree canopy at night...if no ones looking...Ok, i'll admit to going to ground on canoe trips when there's a sandy beach, no ground light, and a clear sky - luv laying on a ground sheet in a sleeping bag with the JRB overshield or whatever its called, just stargazing...oh yeah!

There is not a dew problem every night. Sometimes I can sleep without a shelter and have no dew at all on my bag. It's a gamble, but worth it. I sometime pitch my tarp up at an angle where I can see the sky between the tree cover. I love watching the sky too. I usually have a period during the night where I lay awake for a long time. Stars help.

First couple of test hangs in the backyard I fell asleep watching the stars and seeing a full moon. One woke up at 2a.m to waterthe yard and notice a front had moved though, then woke up again around 6 and the front was gone and sky was awesome again. Had no tarp at the time so got a little damp both times due to dew, but it was fun.

I'm with you on this. I didn't do a lot of it, but cowboy camping is some of the best.

Some one here made some snakeskins from netting for their tarp only so the tarp could be strung in place and easily deployed if need be.
