Anyone interested in a Dolly Sods WV trip this summer

I'm putting this out here for discussion waaaaaaaaaay in advance to guage the interest in a Dolly Sods backpacking/hang trip. I'm thinking this summer sometime. Previously people have said they've never been but always wanted to camp at the Sods.

Who else is interested and what month or weekends do you have an interest in so we can throw out a few dates and put it to a vote? I'm fine with an August or Sept date, but can be flexible. I would rather this be backpacking and hanging instead of just a hang.

HappyCamper, You come up with some great ideas! I actually have an old (very old) wilderness map here at work that I dream with every once in a while. Biker650 and I have spent some tiime at Otter Creek Wilderness area not far from there but it was a long time ago. We would be interested in this trip if all goes well with our schedules. Keep us posted!

I'd like to go... if it's during the summer, when school is out, my kids can go too.

We can put mileage to a vote and then that may decide the route we take. I did 9 miles on Saturday this past summer with RockRat at the Sods. That was a nice day.

My preference is to drive in on Friday and meet up at Red Creek Campground. Keep it at around 10 miles more or less on Saturday and shorter day on Sunday for drive home. Or if people want to meet up in the afternoon on Friday at campground, we could add in a few miles on Friday as well since it stays lighter longer in summer.

If kids want to go and we need to shorten mileage so they have nice time, I'm fine with that as well.

It always rains in the Sods right? I'd like to come as well and bring a daughter or two. Depends on the dates, the timing, the mileage, etc. but it sure sounds like fun!

I've been there 3 times. Once in April where there was rain, snow, sleet, and hail. Once on July 4th where it did NOTHING BUT RAIN FOR 4 days. And then the last trip where the weather was great. That was end of August. So you can see why I suggest Aug. Sept !

Also, if anyone needs a nice trailmap of Dolly Sods, they sell a nice one here locally for $2. So no problem sending them out to whoever wants one. Or I can bring to spring MAHHA hang. I put one on the raffle table last time.

    Here's one website.

Dolly Sods is a great place to take the kids, all the creeks and rocks are a blast to play on. I have taken my children there several times over the past few years. They love it. And, yes, it always seems to rain. Regarding routes, DS is really quite "small" by adult standards and there are so many trails, you could just pick a "destination" for the night and let everyone pick their own route. Also, just south (yet connected by trails) of the southern section of DS is Roaring Plans which has plenty of trees and is now a "wilderness".

Another suggestion would be Cranberry Wilderness which is an hour south of Elkins, WV rather than an hour northeast of Elkins like DS. Cranberry has way more trees at most of their campsites. So, if a large crowd of hammockers is expected, it might be a better location. Though there are plenty of trees in some areas of Dolly Sods, it just might be a bit tough if you need space for 20 hammocks.

I have a two albums on my Picasa site from a couple of trips to Dolly Sods North (now a wilderness, the area on and North of Blackbird Knob trail).

FWIW, the best and most complete maps are found here. I just print them out and tape them together to make a big map.

Thanks for all the great info, tlbj6142! Yes, when RockRat and I went, JD came in from a shorter route and met up with us at our campsite. Actually he got there before us and scouted the area for good trees.
