tlbj - Great maps and pics. I'm definitely going to do all I can to make it to Dolly Sods this year...what a beautiful place.

Needless to say, I'm in. I spent a week at Dolly Sods last July, and it was sunny for the first six days. On the seventh day ... ... I was inspired to design a better method of using a poncho as a pack cover.
There are three or four ways to get to the Forks area of Red Creek, including Happy Camper's suggested route from the campground via the Blackbird Knob Trail (nice!). If we have a large number of participants, we might divide up and use different routes to converge on the Forks for a group hang.

What are the bugs like in mid-summer? I've only gone to DS in the late spring and early fall. We've never had an issue with bugs.

My one time in late Aug (nice warm night) no bugs. I think they all drowned on my July trip with the 4 days of rain.

Not bad. I took DEET in July; didn't use it. Used a bugnet at night.

Whoohoo! Yes let's "converge" on it. I love converging, but get to do it so rarely. HF Flashmob at the Sods!

Man, I'm so there! I did my first BP to Dolly Sods last August, and it was stunning! I'm also going up to the Cranberry this May. Here's a link to the hike we did up at the Sods. http://www.midatlantichikes.com/id116.html
I may try to do a hike up there this spring, and I'll keep an eye out for good campsites.

Perhaps I should have said, "discretely converge..."
