I take 7 steps most times, six also works very well. Depends on whether I am hanging a gathered end, 10 or 11 foor, or a ridgerunner. Whoopies all.

I usually hang 14 to 15 feet if I can find it. To achieve a 30* angle, your straps should be around 5.8 feet high on the tree. However, to achieve the same 30* angle at 18 ft., you need to have your anchors 6.7 feet high, and a 20 ft. hang requires your straps be 7.3 feet high. I'm 5'11" and I can only reach about 7.5 ft. high.

Truth be told, I hung in my backyard regularly for two years at 25 ft. anchor distance (I needed a ladder to get the straps that high). As long as you get your straps high enough up the tree/anchor point, it's as comfy as a 14 to 15 ft. hang.
