    Bias?

    Noob question here:

What should I do with the edges of my 1.9 oz rips top nylon that I bought from RBR? The edges look a little rough, apparently from the factory? My fiancé says it's called bias and it's supposed to be there. My question is this:

If I'm making a hammock, do I just roll it into the double-hem? Or am supposed to cut it down?

I tried to search for this I. The forums but couldn't find it. Please forgive my noviceness. And thank you for any insight!

    Scott

I thought it was called selvage. Yes, roll it into the hem.

It is selvage. It can be seen on woven fabric . You can roll it into the hem no problem.

Bias is the direction which lays (lies?) at a 45 degree angle to the weft and warp (short edge and long edge respectively). Strips cut on the bias are much more "elastic or stretchy".

To the point, the frayed edge or selvage can be cut or rolled into hem. Although it keeps that edge from fraying, I am in the habit of cutting it off - especially when the material is cotton - as it can shrink at a different rate than the other parts of the material and cause seam puckering. Don't know if that would happen with hammocking materials though.

Bias refers to a cut made generally 45 degrees to a fabrics main grain. As mentioned just do a rolled hem.

I've seen the selvedge in plenty of times on a nylon hammock. No issues. I'd trim it on natural fiber fabrics.
