Clifford William Ritt passed away on May 14, 2017 at the age of 67. Cliff was recently hospitalized to deal with complications of a stroke suffered in January 2017.
Cliff is survived by his son, Steve Ritt (Asheville, NC and San Diego, CA) who was at his side in the hospital. Cliff cherished the love and affection of his dear friend, Ann Bell (Mateo, NC). Cliff also valued the friendship and support of members of the Outer Banks Paddlers Club. He is further survived by his sister, Margaret Anderson (David) of Marietta, GA and his brother, Don Ritt (Susan) of Mequon, WI. Many nieces and nephews cherish their memories of Uncle Cliff. His cousins in the Sahlgren and Wahl families join in commemorating his life. Cliff’s parents, Edith and Bill Ritt, passed on many years ago.
Cliff was born and raised in Mahtomedi, MN. He enjoyed playing multiple high school sports. Cliff played collegiate hockey at the University of Pennsylvania, where he earned his degree in Finance from the Wharton School of Business. Cliff worked for many years in the group health insurance industry. After working for large insurers, he opened his own consulting business while in Alexandria, VA.
Cliff spent the past 17 years living in Harbinger, NC. He developed a business as a home handyman with loyal clients who own summer homes and year-around homes on the Outer Banks. At the same time, Cliff developed an avocation as a kayak teacher and guide. His son has followed in similar footsteps as a birding guide. He especially enjoyed paddling and camping with his friends in the Outer Banks Paddlers Club. Cliff was generous with his time and talent to projects such as construction of informational kiosks and trail maintenance within the Pea Island and Alligator River National Wildlife Refuges. He also volunteered helping the houseless while living in Virginia and while in North Carolina.
A private celebration of his life will be held with family and friends. At Cliff’s request, his ashes will be spread in the Albermarle sound.
Memorial donations may be made to the North Carolina Coastal Federation and/or the Nature Conservancy.
