A little bit of a revisit as I'm finalizing my plans.
Coming through the Black Hills area I might try and stay at Timon or Bismarck Lake campgrounds. Neither are or will be reservable by that time (Sept 21/22). What are my odds that the campgrounds will have available sites? Blue Bell is also on my radar and I can reserve what looks like a decent hammock site there now.
    Thanks for the help!

i would say if you hit any of the campgrounds down in the custer state park area (especially before noon) you won't have any trouble at all finding a spot that will work for you, timon in spearfish canyon is much smaller (maybe 10 sites) so that might be a bit tougher although i think you would probably be ok finding something between there and rod and gun that is about 1 mile away.......we have hammock post in our backyard (spearfish) if you can't find anything in the canyon and need a place

There is a private campground on Lester Lane in North Spearfish just off Old Hwy 14 - owned by a woman with the last name of Abernathy. She caters to the motorcycle rally folks, but may still be open to a September camper.
