    February Pinhoti Hike/Hang

    Pinhoti Hike/Hang - Feb 19, 20, 21

I mentioned last month that I planned on doing a Pinhoti hike in February and a number of members expressed an interest. I usually do the Chinnabee/Pinhoti/Skyway loop. It is about 16-18 miles. It keeps me from having to arrange a shuttle or from backtracking. I normally park at the Turnipseed Camp parking area on 281. I hike the 2 miles on the Chinnabee to the Pinhoti intersection at Little Caney Head and then hike south on the Pinhoti about 3 miles to a campsite near a spring. Saturday morning I continue south on the Pinhoti to Adams Gap and then onto the Skyway Loop trail. I take the Skyway Loop trail 5.5 miles to the Chinnabee Silent Trail intersection and then look for a campsite along Cheaha Creek leaving less than 4 miles Sunday morning to my car. You can check out this loop trip at http://www.pinhotitrailalliance.org/loopscw.html.

Another option could be setting up a base camp and day hiking. We could hike to the 2 miles of the Chinnabee to the Pinhoti and set up camp at Little Caney Head Friday afternoon. There is ample room and water available. This is normally a crowded camping area but maybe not this time of year. From this base camp we could hike north on the Pinhoti 3 miles to McDill Point Saturday morning. We could then take the Pinhoti/Cave Creek connector trail to the Cave Creek trail and loop back to Little Caney Head. There are several other other possible day hikes in this area; the Nubbin Creek Trail and the Odum Scout Trail to High Falls.

If anyone is still interested just let me know and we will fine tune the plans. If we do the base camp at Little Caney Head that would allow the opportunity for late or next day arrivers.

Sounds great Dale, I'll plan to be there.

Hetairoi and I hiked from Cheaha Trailhead to the US 431 Trailhead on the Pinhoti last weekend. It surely was pretty...and muddy.

I would be interested in going esp if it is a backpacking trip. Seems everytime I go to Alabama (Sispey) all anyone wants to do is basecamp and do day hikes

Also I will be bringing a friend with me.

Count me in as a possible. I will have to look at my schedule and see how things will work out.

Southmark, which one of Mr Parkays map would be for this route?

Attached is an overview map. Mr. Parkay's maps 5 and 6 will show most of this loop. This past February I had a low of 34 Friday night and in the low 40s Saturday night. Days where low 60's. It was a very pleasant hike. Of course this is Alabama and it varires. I can be hot or or we could have freezing rain.

I will post some photos soon. It looks as if the 16-17 mile hike is the preferred option.
