Hammock Wall Tent - Netted or 1oz sides - Side Entry

I've been kicking this idea around for a wall tent style tarp and thought I'd see what others think about it.

What if you hung your tarp high and wide and attached a skirt to the ground on all four sides? The tarp roof would need to be water proof but the sides could be netting or light ripstop. My thoughts are you would get a tarp you can stand under with wind water protections. You'd have to slit the ends for the hammock ropes and either Velcro them for an adjustment or overlap the fabric. The only added weight would be the skirting sides and ends but at 1oz per yard it couldn't add that much weight.

And since we are doing what if... What if... you were to take it further and inserted extra fabric on the side to add a tent pole arch to dome a side entry leaning out to make it look something like:

The domed entry could be made by adding a triangle piece to the tarp and channeling the outside edge.

I've used up to a 16ft Kelty to make a winter style tarp and yes it is 4.5lbs but it also covers you to the ground and you can stand up in it. I think this wall tent could be made closer to 2.5lbs and would be very comfortable and well protected.

If you've seen any of my other posts I'm working on a 5.5 ft hammock that can be hung side by side and also stacked. So the dream is to have a family of 4 on two trees using a single 2lb shelter. That's when the extra tarp weight is manageable when you're covering multiple people. Also with the short hangs on the hammocks the shelter would only have to be 10 feet long.

Let me know what your think or if you know of any out there!

Hammock Wall Tent - Netted or 1oz sides - Side Entry

You could make a life size mock up with tyvek to see if you liked it and make any changes before real build. You could hang your hammocks on inside for a test.
I can't remember, someone made or makes a smokehouse hot tarp tent for his hammock. If you looked it up--it might give some ideas.
For me--I would not stack hammocks in bunk bed fashion. I'd put two hammocks side by side under one tarp and two more hammocks side by side in another tarp nearby. Some use spreader bars for spacing and others place straps as far side to side on same tree--with one strap coming off far right side of tree and other hammock strap coming off far left side of same tree!?!?! Lots of hammockers do that.
Good luck with your family camping trips!

I bought 3 Kelty Noah 12ft tarps and have plans to use one for the top, then cut the end doors, triangle arch and low side from each of the other two.

    Tarp Cut Outs.png

This design is easy because almost all the edges are finished with tie outs. It will be heavy because each tarp is 2lbs but if I get an 12x10x8 shelter with side walls 4 ft tall that is similar to the family tents.

I may still use the tyvek & tape to prototype as it would be easier (and cheaper)...

If anyone has seen a wall tent based on a rope ridgeline or similar tarp and bug net let me know...

    Thanks!

If you search for "hammock hot tent" on youtube, several styles come up. Might get some info on build or troubles others have run into. Just omit the parts about having a wood stove in a synthetic fabric house! :0

Good Suggestions... I see the Eureka for sale on ebay for under $70... I was hanging with my GF at the beach and we were sharing an oversized bug net and it was less than desirable. I think I'll order that before our next trip together.

Like the Hot Tent! Still my holy grail is for a shelter you can stand up in with protection at a weight I can carry... I don't think there has been a lot done because it's not worth it for one person. But for 2 or more I think you can justify the 3-5lb oversized shelter...

Sierra Madre Nube is kinda what you're talking about too

I know Shug's trialing one, and has a vid for it

but I still agree with you, there's not really an awesome solution out there that's legit packable

I like your basic original premise, although I think it might be easier to somehow attach it in conjuncture with an internal pole mod
