the BPL pro balaclava came this week! i like it!
the only real concern i had about it was that there was no way to vent, so any activity would cause me to over heat. then i would simply have to take it off.
sometimes it's better to have options... so i customized it w/ a zipper.
it's not the prettiest sewing job, but it works like a charm!

    here's the way it came...

here it is w/ the new zipper...

and here it is zipped open

there are pictures of the process in the "gear not listed" gallery.

Nice job on the mod, Tim. It's kinda hard to believe they didn't have some way to vent the Balaclava but those guys at BPL are the biggest gram weenies I have ever seen. Zipper must have been to heavy.

nice job Tim. Personally I would sweat myself to death if I wore something like that to bed.

I still don't see how some of you can wear all that clothing to bed. The less I have on the better I sleep no matter what the temp outside.

I like to use my clothing as part of my sleep system - I'm carrying the weight, why not take advantage? But Tim uses enough insulation to keep a shaved polar bear warm in Alabama (JMO)

In the winter I carry a set of long johns, in the summer I just sleep in shorts and a t-shirt. I do sleep in a Patagonia beanie style hat in the winter since that is where most of the head escapes from.

If it gets really cold like 0°-10° I will wear my camp clothes to bed over my long johns.

Now you have to remember this is based on me sleeping in a tent since I haven't used my hammock in the winter yet. It may change but I doubt it

my digital scale only shows tenths of ozs, so i can't qualify as a true gram weeny (not trying to actually<g>) but before the mod the balaclava weighed 1.9 ozs, & after the mod it weighs 2.0 ozs.
the 9" zipper showed up at .1 oz as it came, but i removed part of it as well as some material from the balaclava.
any way, not a bad increase for that much more versatility.
