Hello,
I always bring a ham radio set up with me when I go to hangs and people have asked about it. This weekend is something called Field Day when lots of Amateur Radio Operators get out and do some emergency preparedness activities. Just wanted to throw out an invitation to anyone who is looking to do some hanging and learn about Ham radio. I am the president of our local radio club and am in charge of Field Day. We camp out S.E. of Petoskey within walking distance of the NCT. There are lots of places to hang if you want to join us. One warning, we do run a generator most of the night Saturday (lulls us hams to sleep) but there are plenty of spots within a short walk that would be great for hanging and not be too noisy. There is also the Skyline Trail not even a mile up the road (with parking area) and there is a campsite just down the Skyline trail as part of the NCT.
Friday we mostly just hang out and chat around the campfire - no generator. Saturday at 2:00 pm is when the contest part of the event starts and that is when we get going on the radios. We have an outhouse but bring our own water as there is nothing there except a fire circle.
Here is a map if you are interested in joining us for some fun.
