    Charles Deam Next Weekend

Good morning everyone! Taking my wife and two sons to Deam next weekend for a 2 night hang and hike. We'll likely take the peninsula trail up to the lake....depending on what time we get there Friday may camp part way to the lake. I've seen recent reports of some mud and read all the time about horse damage to the trails, but what advice would any of you give to us on our first trip there?

    Thanks!

    Jason

I have only been there once, so I am not an expert, but make sure you keep an eye on water. None of the streams on the map had any water in them when I was there. Of course, if you go out on the peninsula, you have access to the lake.
Homer: Sir, I need to know where I can get some business hammocks.

Hank Scorpio: Hammocks? My goodness, what an idea. Why didn't I think of that? Hammocks!

In this weather you are brave brave brave! They rerouted some of the trail on this one so you're not always in the main mud/horse poop slide (higher ground). Now you can actually walk the peninsula trail and enjoy it. There are 3-4 small water holes along the way but they can get nasty; no in/out flow, just tiny ponds. With proper filtering it's fine, but since it's only 4.5mi from the lot you may just want to carry a little of your own and wait to filter at Monroe Lake.

Man the rain chances were only 20 percent a few days ago so now it's not looking so great!

Carry your water, it's a pretty flat walk. There is a decent campsite about halfway out if needed. One word of caution, I was out there in March and there had already been a fair amount of traffic, lots of trashed campsites at the lake which makes me think it's a party spot. Have fun and be safe!

Thanks very much! That's disappointing to hear about the lake campsites

Yeah this place is one big frat party. A "wilderness" but with a road running right thru it...access is way too easy. Oh well.

As for camping, you can camp pretty much anywhere you want as long as you're 100' away from ponds, lake and trails. Unless of course it's a designated site, then you can pretty much hang right on the water's edge. I never camped in a "site" here since they're grossly overused. People trashing the place, pissin all over, that's the last place I wanna be. Hike off trail for a hundred yards into a nice pine grove and enjoy the wilderness. I was there in January and March and had a good time picking some new places to camp.

The USFS is doing what they can. You'll see these new signs at all the sites. I'd hate to see what the "next step" may be, but who knows what the gov will do. But I'm on their side either way. Something's gotta change.

I was there couple weeks ago, the trails were decent. Lots of trash at the campsites by the lake. You have the get there very early if you want to get a designated campsite by the lake.
