    Please recommend a tarp.

My three kids are now old enough to go on extended hammock camping trips with me, but we don't have enough tarps for everybody. I need to get 2or 3 tarps for them. My Kids are 12,10 and 7 and all are very tall for their age, the older 2 are in full sized hammock. Since I have to potentially have to buy 3, I'm looking for inexpensive, but good value will have to trump inexpensive, because I don't wanna buy them more than one if the first one fails. We will mostly car or paddle camp, so weight isn't too much of an issue. We will do the vast amount of our camping in the height of summer, so we don't need a ton of coverage. I really like my Claytor Diamond Fly (CDF), but at $50.00 for the tarp and another $50.00 for shipping I think it's too much money (when I bought mine, 8 years ago,it was $50.00 shipping included), but l'd like to stick with a diamond tarp if possible, because I'd be setting up 4 tarps instead of just my own and I love the ease of set up of my CDF. I'm also in the market for cheap bug nets too.

    Thanks,
    B.

I'd strongly suggest looking for a Kelty Noah 12' on sale. Great tarps with a ton of coverage, although a little bit on the heavy side.

I know you mentioned preference to diamond tarps, but I would recommend taking a look at the Hennessey Hex tarps. It's hard to beat them for the cost and durability. You can pick them up on Amazon (free shipping) for $60 each. This is a very tried and true entry tarp that could serve your kids well for many years.

+1 on Noah. But a disclaimer, I don't own one. But if I was mostly car or paddling I would.

Do you guys pitch the Kelty tarp on the diagonal or in an A-frame mode. My eldest boy has a Hennessy Scout Zip and the tarp that came with it seems well made but a little on the small side for the hammock, (I'm hoping it'll be fine for my littlest boy), does anyone know the difference in size between the hex tarp and the one that came with the scout ?

The Yukon outfitter walkabout tarp works Good, unless the the wind is blowing the rain sideways.

By all means, let's argue about whether or not a hammock will hurt a tree. All the while ignoring the fact that there is an island of garbage the size of Texas floating in the Pacific ocean. Or how about the fact that over 75% of the world's nuclear reactors are leaking...

Over Memorial Day weekend I slept in my Warbonnet Blackbird XLC for 3 nights while in the upper peninsula of Michigan. I had my 12' Noah over top of it pitched diagonal. We got rain off and on over the weekend, including a good thunderstorm the second night, and all of my stuff stayed completely dry.

Last September I camped with a few other members from these forums for a couple nights, and slept in my ENO Double Nest. That time I pitched my Noah in A frame/porch mode. We didn't get any rain, but if we had I'm sure I would have stayed dry then as well. Here's the link to the video from that trip. There's a pic of my Kelty set up in there at the 1.37 mark. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hXH_-em7PsI

Since weight isn't an issue, I'd recommend the Kelty Noah's 9 tarp. The dimensions are 9' x 9' for 81 sqft. The diagonal ridgeline will measure 12.72'.

I used it over a picnic table during high winds over Memorial day weekend and it handled it well (picture below). I've seen a sale several times already and just picked up a 9' for my nephew last week..

EDIT: Note that the Kelty tarps have catenary cuts.

Check woot.com and campsaver.com regularly -- they often have the Kelty tarps for great prices.
