Hey guys.
I have three tarps so was thinking of setting one up when I go for picnics or to the beach with my GF.
The problem is that I"m often not around any trees.
I was thinking about just buying two large telescoping poles for a ridgeline and then tie everything off on for points.
The main thing I'm worried about is the wind.
Another idea is to get a day tent / canopy.

I just had Paul at arrowhead make me a custom 8x10 tarp for two REI replacement poles.
I used the 6' poles if I did a standalone (sans picnic table) I'd do the REI 8' poles.
How well you stake it out will determine how much wind it can handle.
We have a shade very similar to the one you posted a link to. It works well for us at the beach because its easy to break down if it gets too windy, and as you mentioned, we are not always around trees. I'm not sure what beach you go to, but here on the Island the wind can get pretty gusty and sometimes we just forgo the shade altogether for fear of damaging our stuff. I had a Housefly up once and a gust of wind was strong enough to break 3/4 of the way through one of the guylines it came with. We got the stand alone shelter after that, and have found it to give just enough in the wind to handle it very well, even when staked into the sand.
