    Stitch for Hammock Hems

I was wondering if it would be better to use a zig-zag stitch for hemming the sides of a hammock instead of straight stitch. My reason is that with straight stitching the tension will all be on the thread if the fabric stretches more that the thread. With zig-zag this wouldn't happen.

    Thoughts?

I've done both - a wide zigzag and a double straight stitch. I like the straight stitch better so far because it doesn't let the hammock sides stretch out and sag unnecessarily due to the stress of entry/exit.

I've always used a straight stitch. I'd have to check the book, but I think the instructions in Ed Speer's hammock camping book uses a straight stitch.

I noticed in one of the pics of Warbonnet hammocks that a zig zag stitch is used, at least near the whipping.

i've herd it said that a ziz zag is more flexible, more forgiving, but i don't know that you would really need that on the hem.
could be helpful like you said, but i suspect it would add to the sag like BB said.
let us know how it behaves for you if you decide to use it.
I too will something make and joy in it's making

You made me look. The zig zag stitch is on the front of the hammock. It is holding a reinforcement strip that runs from the zipper ends to the whipping on each side.
