Flounder,
I'm thinking of upgrading to a Chameleon and Thunder Fly for an AT hike. How is this working for you? Would you recommend the combination? Do you have any suggestions or insight before I take the plunge?
Many thanks.
I had a Mamajamba. I wanted doors. I made a set of doors for one end and a Grizz Beak for the other, not knowing which I would like better. I didn't like either. Sold the tarp for a Superfly. The doors were a PITA. I to remember to bring them, decide whether to install them in advance or not, and then actually put them on. Not a big deal to install, but they were one more thing to hassle with and forget...
I plan to make something like the Microfly for summer use. Just enough door to keep the hammock end protected.
Yes, my pack weighs 70lbs, but it's all light weight gear....

Do you know the total length of the Thunderfly laid flat from tip of door to tip of other door?

I absolutely love it

I feel like people will be happier with the Thunderfly instead of the MJ or with the Minifly instead of the EG. The extra end coverage really extends the severity of a storm you can handle even after considering the slight loss of side coverage you get when comparing TF vs MJ (MF and Edge are same width). The door flaps allow you to set up with head or foot ends into the weather and still be fine in most cases and also give alot more coverage in a storm even when the tarp is pitched higher than you like because you weren't expecting bad weather...so alot more room for error.
I totally agree. Even though I already have the Mamajamba and Superfly, I'm still considering the Thunderfly. It sounds and looks that good! I can recall several trips where the Mamajamba kept me perfectly dry, but that little bit of door coverage would have put my mind at ease.
I was looking at the Thunderfly today.
It's on the top of my list for my next tarp purchase.

"...in Florida, she felt air conditioning for the first time, and it was cold and unnatural upon her skin."
The only bad thing is 8.5" less tarp on EACH side (compared to my mamajamba). So my gear while in porch mode will have to be organized with more care.
