I am sitting here on a grey day with 100 feet of Amsteel and thinking of changing the suspension on my Bridge. Anyone who has done this care to reveal the length of the whoopies they made to replace the webbing from the ring to the tree?

Seems like six footers (12 foot starting length in Amsteel) would just be way too long considering the added length of the split sections of webbing that attach to the hammock ends.

to a first approximation, the hammock body is 7' long,
and the ring at the suspension triangle apex is 1' beyond the
body, in the horizontal plane. So that's 9'. What span of trees do
you want to cover? 20'….you're looking at 5.5' length WS.
17'….4' long slings.

Thanks Grizz! Being my first Whoopie I am guessing that the length of line I start with is double that of the finished sling i.e. start with 8 foot of line for a 4 foot whoopie. Am I correct?

Depends on what you put at the other end. A fixed eye loop that has a diameter of, say, a couple of inches and has a 6" bury will add another 9".
Add another couple to finish the other end of that line.

Okay. Here is an update on progress. Replaced all webbing with Amsteel. I have not taken off the rings on the hammock yet as I am still trying to figure out how to use trekking poles.

Removed webbing, ring and tri-glide 111 grams each end for a total of 222 grams.

Whoopie slings and Amsteel total 25 grams per side for a total of 50. Slings adjust from about 16 inches to 4 feet 7 inches.

222-50 = 172 grams or 6.06 ounces. Almost half a pound.

Total hammock weight now is 956 grams (2.1 pounds). That includes spreader bars and stuff sack.

I doubt I will take the rings off the hammock. They weigh a half an ounce each are will probably make it easier to use trekking poles as spreaders. I will gladly trade that one ounce for the 8.5 ounces I would drop if I can get rid of the spreader bars. Hammock would be about 1.6 pounds at that point. Add a tarp and tree huggers and you have total shelter solution for something around 2.75 lbs. That is good enough for me.
