    Exploding hitches are the bomb

I've been seeing a lot of exploding hitches around recently. That is, hitches that come undone by pulling on the working end. Many of them seem to have been invented in the last few decades. Is there a shift in knot tying that is leading to these ultra-releasable ones, or am I just more aware of them now when I run across them?

Here's a list of some of my (and your) favorites:
    Siberian hitch
    Slippery clove hitch
    Slippery larks head
    Ferrimond friction hitch
    Mooring hitch
    Highwayman's hitch
    Becket hitch
    Tumble hitch
    Round-turn becket hitch

(Editing the list as people suggest more to keep them all in one place)

An awful lot of knots can be made slippery, by just making just putting a bight thru' the last turn (instead of threading the bitter end right through).

    one for your list,
    Becket Hitch

D'oh! That's one of the primary ones I use. How'd I forget to include it?

I was never interested in knots until I started hammock camping and rigging tarps. I rank my hatred of untying my old makeshift jumble of jammed knots up there with untangling a string of icicle Christmas lights. Learning to tie cool "exploding knots" and to end "sophisticated" knots with a slippery half hitch or bight is like the Holy Grail of knot tying. It's magical to see a good strong knot instantly disintegrate without a trace.

I'm new to hammocking this year. I enjoy using Dutch's little helper bugs, but I have also started to use some hitches - just because it's good to learn new stuff with lots of opportunities to practice.

    Tumble hitch
Originated by Dan Lehman as a variation of Highwaymans hitch--Dan Lehman improved it.

I learned that one once, I was very impressed. Need to relearn it now, it's been too long.

Same here, fugalster, if I don't use a knot---I forget how to tie it.
