I believe all of this comes out a natural curiosity to learn all one can about a topic. We all like to ask questions and increase useful knowledge.
At least that's what I told myself when I was on the deck last year in 12*F weather doing head to head tests of various DIY alcohol stove designs. If you know what this picture means, you're infected, too.

I recently got back into biking and want a second bike. Along with getting into climbing and deciding I want to go back to the ground to lighten my load and buying a zpacks duo... the wifey has finally had it. Time to start selling my hammock gear 😢
