    NO Waste Whoopie!

I'm new to all of this outdoor stuff - but wanted to contribute if I can.

I was making a adjustable structural ridgeline last week with some 7/64 amsteel and realized that I could save some of this precious magical rope if I was clever in the design.
Only needing +/- 6-8 inches of adjustability I was able to move the adjustable end bury far from the fixed-end.

I made a diagram and a spreadsheet to do the calculations for anyone else who's interested. I've attached both. You can specify min and max length and some other parameters and it will tell you how much rope you need and where to locate the adjustable end bury. There are some other parameters you can adjust, calculations assume 25% loss on the burys.

Hope it's useful to someone. I'm learning a bunch here.

    Thanks to all!

    Charlie

p.s. sorry if this has already been covered elsewhere

It has been covered elsewhere but info can get lost around here especially if it is older info. New posts tend to help newer members so I think it's good you posted.

Thanks for the info ! I've been converted to hammocks for awhile now, but I am just getting into the amsteel whoopie slings, continuous loops, and dogbones. Too much fun !

    Hi Charlie,

Welcome to DIY. I hope you have lots of available time and deep pockets. This DIY stuff is very addictive, I have an ever lengthening list of todos.

Very nice calculator, thanks for sharing, and keep up the good work.

Here are a couple of comments, just food for thought, please don't take it as criticism :

    1. Amsteel is overkill for ridgeline, 1.75 mm or 2.2 mm ZingIt or LashIt is plenty adequate strength wise.

    2. The only disadvantage to Whoopies is that they take almost twice the required cordage as the overall length of the project. If you only need a small amount of adjustment, as in a ridge line, you will save cord by using a long dog bone and a short whoopie.

Here is a picture of a ridge line that I recently made for an 11' hammock:
    https://www.hammockforums.net/forum/...2&d=1497279279

I started with a nominal length of 109", made a 90" dog bone, and a whoopie that adjusts for 14" to 24" (more adjustment than necessary BTW, I almost always overdo things). In this case the ridge line is a single line of 1.75 mm LashIt for most of the length of the hammock and the whoopie is almost completely under the end cap at the head end. I wish I had made the dog bone longer and the whoopie shorter, but live and learn.

Keep up the good work, and keep us posted on your projects,

    Jack
