Back country camping spots near Nashville, TN

I just moved south to Nashville and the wife wants to explore local the area. Any good places within a few hours to hike and Hang in the back country? I've had a trip to the Smokies so far but we would like to keep the travel a little shorter and want to take our 6 yr old out. Thanks in advance.

Depending on what you mean by "back country," Nashville is in the middle of a TON of good back country camping. Do you merely mean to avoid car camping spots?

Oh, heck yes. East of Nashville is Savage Gulf, Frozen Head, Fiery Gizzard, Big South Fork, etc. These are all roughly 2 - 2.5 hours away and some beautiful hiking areas.

Yeah, you are going to be busy exploring all there is to offer around Nashville. One site I can recommend is Cloudhiking.com, though it hasn't been updated in a while the guy that runs it is local and a pretty good cartographer as well, so his maps and trail logs are really awesome.

Welcome to the area! My little ones really like Stone Door, that's a nice one south of you and there are loads of trees to hang from.

You can get to the Fiery Gizzard in about an hour. It's the nearest fun hiking I can think of.

Check out the Cumberland Trail too. Some of the segments have some really great campsites

Well car camping is ok provided there are trees for 2-3 hammocks. But mainly I'm looking for spots where you can hike in a little and can camp legally either in a site or wherever.

Welcome to TN. Just about all the places mentioned above you can chose anything from driving up to days of hiking. Savage Gulf would be a good place to start.

I completely concur if you start with the ridge trails. The valley trails are a different story. The Stone Door ranger station area has a camp ground within a very short hike and then a day hike out to Stone Door would be a great place to start. This is a beautiful area.

At savage gulf in the stone door side there is a hike about 3 miles from the ranger station that is pretty level and goes to a camping area that you can hang every 15 feet. Also, look at virgin falls which is a great hike and place to hang.
