Basketing is when you wrap around a tree and connect to both loops. HH style of tying.

Working in construction for years, we lived by the straps we used, literally.

http://www.fdlake.com/rig-slng.html, a simple diagram of style to 'rig' something. Just replace the load in the diagram with the tree. Inspect your straps, cinch them snugly to the tree to prevent sliding, avoid shocking the straps with sudden movement.
All rules to live by.

That's what I was looking for. So does anyone know how much weight a simple tree hugger choked can take? Of course it also depends on how tight the hammock is hung.

Doing it the first way will also put rotational stress on the strap as it naturally wants to rotate to the position in the second diagram.

That would depend on a lot of other factors in how you have the hammock aligned one end to the other. Second rigging to a tree is a lot different than lifting say a pipe, the tree to webbing adds a lot of friction/grip that would not be there in a construction type of lift.

having been a climber for 20 years and rigged thousands of climbs, I have set up choked rigs more times than you can count, in systems that take 1000's of pounds of force on them, far in excess of the loads a hammock will put on the suspensions we use to hang. With an extremely light weight rated webbing like that of the HH huggers yah you may be pushing, but not with the stronger straps that most of us use.

Its still going to want to pull to the centerline of the tree.

Yep, we choke pipe and rolls of Bentomat almost daily. Even with a choked strap wrapped twice around the pipe, the choke always wants to rotate to be inline with what its being pulled with.

The bark being rough, adds friction. Which is why I said you are also introducing stress onto the strap offsetting the choke like that, Its wants to rotate but is needing to overcome the friction to do so.

Agreed. I dont think we are overloading our webbing.

And for what its worth. A good portion of the straps we use at work are rated for 9000# in a basket, 4500 in a choke and we go through them like water. A few of our lifts or pulls require straps rated at 17,000#.

I agree that it would cause friction that would wear the strap quicker and rub the tree. I also think it would slip around and loosen when bouncing in and out of the hammock.
