Quilting thread

What kind of thread is used for quilting loops? I assume it is heavier than standard thread.

Use a synthetic yarn.

or go to the sewing shop (or hobby/craft center) and look on the thread rack for quilting thred, or the home dec/buttonhole threads- limited colors, but much thicker and sturdier.

not really- there are yarn needles(frequetly referenced on the whoopie sling threads) and quilting needles, but mostly what you will need for the loops in a synthetic quilte (under or top) will need to be about 2" long and an eye big enough for the tread/yarn/ cord you will be using- I've even used some crochet cotton to make my loops- it was a test quilt, so no worry about excessive water exposure.

Jardine recommends thick, hairy yarn for quilting loops. The "hairiness" of the yarn prevents the loops from slipping and hence "traps" the fabric shell and insulation to prevent shifting.

I think an added benefit would be that the yarn would not cut through the shell fabric like thread might. When shifting the quilt while sleeping or preparing to sleep, there can be a lot of stress put on the quilting loops and thin thread might cut through the fabric.
