Took my Darien Dream hammock out for what was supposed to be a two night trip.
Day 1 - 9 Miles - Caledonia to Tumbling Run Shelter
Day 2 - 6 Miles - Tumbling Run Shelter to Rocky Mountain Shelter
Day 3 - 4 Miles - Rocky Mountain Shelter to Caledonia
Total of 19 miles.
During the first night, I made the amateur mistake of having my head against the bug net while I was sleeping and paid the price for it - lesson learned.
On the second day, we reached Rocky Mountain shelter by lunch time and were planning on spending the night.
When we got there, we met a guy who was already set up for the night. We talked for a bit and we quickly became uncomfortable when he told us that he was out hunting the Appalachian trail killer. He told us the killer had killed multiple people in the past few weeks (we knew this wasn't true.) What made us uncomfortable was the large dagger that he showed us telling us, "If I find him, he's not going to know what hit him."
We told him we were going to head down to the spring to get some water. When we were far enough away that he couldn't hear us, we looked at each other and said in unison, "there is no way we're staying here tonight." So we hopped on the road at the bottom of the hill and walked six miles back to Caledonia.
This was by far the craziest trip I've had yet! Video below.
