I just got my bbdl 1.7 and i love it! but its been cold so i have not used it yet , besides my yard ,new to hanging and i am planning to do a week on the foothills trail in SC starting around or before Memorial Day (end of may)with my brother (he turned me on to hammocks). will i need to lug a therm a rest pad for insulation or will just a sleeping bag do the trick ?
I'd say yes. At least some CCF. But you'd be surprised how low you can get with a Wallyworld blue pad. Cheap, light and warm. Usually it's pick any two!

I think I got down to the lower 60's with a fleece throw doubled up in my hammock and a sweatshirt on. It packs down a lot smaller than a pad and you can use it to cover up with while sitting around cooking, chatting, etc. I wouldn't trust something like that much lower than 60-65 though.
Unless you sleep in the cold temps often, you'll probably need at least some kind of insulation. Like Kukri said, a fleece might do the trick, or just a lot of clothes.
Thanks for the replies. I was trying to keep lightest /compact as possible. I got a big Agnes inflatable that packs down small and light I guess ill be using that.
Always a great idea to start with gear you already have- be sure to yard test! then you will know if it is OK before you hit the trail temps, or if you will need to supplement.

If it's only going to be in the 60s (not 60 but like 65) then a cheap windshield sun visor will work. Those things can fold down really small and they weigh very little.
+1 on the windshield sun visor.
I used it, and a $15 Wallyworld sleeping bag as an UQ down to about 28, and I could tell the visor did most of the work.
If you have gear making skills, I highly recommend making your own summer UQ out of MacEntyre's insultex.
