I just got my bbdl 1.7 and i love it! but its been cold so i have not used it yet , besides my yard ,new to hanging and i am planning to do a week on the foothills trail in SC starting around or before Memorial Day (end of may)with my brother (he turned me on to hammocks ). will i need to lug a therm a rest pad for insulation or will just a sleeping bag do the trick ?

You'll want some sort of back insulation for all but the hottest nights. The sleeping bag won't help all that much as its "loft" is crushed flat on your back side.

FWIW, a 3/4 length Therarest ought to be good down 40-50F. Any colder and you might want something a bit wider as your shoulders, the sides of your hips and legs might get a bit cold.

    Short answer, yes.

I found for comfort, any temps below 70*, (for me), require some kind of insulation (pad, uq, sleeping bag wrapped around me). Sleeping indoors with just a top quilt, I can still get cold butt syndrome. Throw in some wind chill factors and outdoor temps, and the cbs compounds itself quickly.

Take your pad or find a uq.

if you're young i think you'll be fine with just a little 24x24 section of CCF. i always carry a section of that to sit on during breaks and lunch and whatnot. then at night it goes right under my butt. weight and cost is minimal

I too found that some sort of insulation is required below 70F. Your choices range from Walmart blue closed cell foam pads all the way up to specialized hammock underquilts.
