    Dumb HH Question

Ok, I was looking at the HH website ( ) and came up with a question to which I could find no answer. So, I'll post it to the pros. I noticed that the HH comes in a few different ratings of weight it will hold. What determines that rating? My guess would be material/fabric, but could it be the spectra suspension lines? Anyone care to chime in on this?

The lines are definitely different. I have a UL; most of the guys I backpack with have an Explorer (I think). Mine is rated for 200 lbs; theirs for 250. Strictly as an eyeball measurement, my lines seem to be about half the diameter of theirs. In any event, mine are noticeably smaller. Also, I think the specs say that mine is for people up to 6 ft, whereas theirs allow for someone slightly taller. Mine also weighs 10?, 11? ounces less than theirs.

    hey Hooch-
It's not a dumb question, particularly if one had a need to boost the rating and could do so by using swapping in different lines.

I have data, but not necessarily answers. I have three models : Desert Rat, Explorer Deluxe, and Explorer Ultralight. A table :

    Explorer Deluxe : 300 lbs. : 210D Oxford nylon
Explorer Ultralight : 250 lbs. : 70D nylon high count
    Desert Rat : 250 lbs. : 210D Oxford nylon

The ropes for all three are different. The Explorer Deluxe has ropes with largest diameter, and it is quite pliable. The ropes for the Explorer Ultralight and Desert Rat are similar, but the Desert Rat's has larger diameter. Unlike the Deluxe's, these ropes have what appears to be a fused material at the core, making them considerably stiffer.

Given that the Deluxe and Desert Rat are made of the same material (but different sizes----I suppose that a longer hammock distributes weight over more material and so increases the rating, but aren't sure on that), but have different ratings, the rope would seem to make the difference.

I'm noticing another model on the chart (Ultimate Survivor) with nearly the same dimensions as the Explorer Ultralight, and the same material, but a higher rating (300 lbs). That too suggests the rope makes a difference.

of course, you could actually drop HH a line and ask. Ann is really helpful.

I think the determining thing is the material. I think the lines maybe different, but are not nesscesarly the weakest link. I think they use lighter and weaker line for the lighter ones, but the lines would stil be rated higher than the fabric.

A side note, I think it is really hard now to determine the strength of line by looking at it. I have spectra that looks like dental floss and is rated to 200 lbs. The spectra I use on my hammock is 7/64" thick and rated to 1300-1600 lbs.

I think cost might play into it somewhere too.

I can't remember exactly, it was from a sailing place. I linked it here somewhere.

Do a search for my posts with Armsteel 7/64 spectra.

Maybe someone should start a thread where everyone posts links to DIY gear.

Not really, I'm really a lot more interested in making a DIY hammock for now, I'm just trying to learn a little about the HH. I've never slept in one and was just curious, really. Why got one to get rid of? If my attempts at a DIY hammock, and eventually a tarp, goe as planned, I don't think I'll go back to one commercially purchased, but I do have to admit that the Warbonnet hammock and tarp look pretty interesting.

Pretty good idea, actually. Wish I'd though of it.

Or maybe make a DIY "Suppliers" article similar to the "Hammock Manufacturers" one?
