Setting up hammock as a bivy

Planning a 4 day / 3 night trip and at least the first night will probably be on the ground...

Practiced and fine tuned my setup. My only concern is winds knocking down the poles so I might replace a few ti stakes with MSR Groundhogs

The gear: Warbonnet Blackbird (single layer with whoopie suspension and Dutch clips & hooks ), shortened Thermarest ZLlite Sol (fitted to insert into the back of my ZPacks Nero, not pictured), 11ft tarp in snakeskins with a full ridgeline, polycro sheet, two trekking poles, a pair of pole cups and 7 titanium stakes.

    Setting up the tarp

I adjusted the head end higher than the other side.

Messy but it held in place. The shorter end was staked with one line.

I used the Dutch clips to wrap up excess line on the ridge line of hammock and the tarp.

With the hammock in place. The ground pad will cover shoulder to knees. A stuff sack converted to a pillow will insulate my head and the backpack stuffed with the under quilt will be used under my feet.

    Going to ground!

With that out of the way, I like your set up and have imagined doing the same if I am stuck going to ground someday. I have set up my HG Standard in the back yard and it does work well (it looks like it would be big enough for one and I do carry a 5' sheet of Tyvek I use to put my stuff on (don't use many stuff sacks in my pack so I like having somewhere clean and dry to dump my stuff at camp and for the night). I use a cut torso length 1/4" pad from Gossamer Gear as leg insulation with my HG Phoenix underquilt and as my sit pad (when not sitting in the hammock).

I don't think you would have a problem with your polls blowing over as the tarp is staked down laterally. I think the Ground Hogs would be a good idea on the ends if you are not tying off to a decent anchor point. I don't think you should have a problem with the side tie outs or at least any more problem than you would have when you are hanging. YMMV. I carry 2 Easton stakes and 4 Ti shepherd's hook stakes typically.

Enjoy your adventure and let us know how things turned out.

If bugs are not an issue, you can just skip the hammock entirely and go full cowboy.
