I was determined to go camping this past weekend. I hadn't had a chance to hang my new Superfly outside. I also recently finished converting two Costco down throws into an underquilt. Friday night didn't work out. Saturday night none of my friends could join me, but I figured if Shug, Syntax77, and others could go backpacking solo, I could survive a campground on my own. I thought I'd just lay in the hammock and watch the Alabama football game on my phone. That wouldn't have worked out as I didn't have a signal at all. Luckily, as I was looking for a place to set up camp, I noticed a guy sitting by a fire with a hammock hanging nearby. I started a conversation about hammocks. I ended up setting up nearby and we shared the campfire and had a good time talking about camping and outdoors. He was in a similar situation with no one being available to go camping. Hammocks: great for meeting new people. I even learned something. I had no idea that firewood in a TP shape was for light or how much light it could give off. It took a while to get to sleep, too much water and some readjusting of my hammock, but once I did, I slept great. I was set up near the stream and the sound of running water was nice. I seem to have a hard time getting the foot end only a little higher than the head end when the ground is not even. Just going to have to go camping more for practice. Even though the low was probably only about 69F, I got to test the fit of the underquilt. I modeled the size and suspension after my Jarbidge River. I was quite cozy. I just threw another Costco down throw over me. I'm converting that one into a summer top quilt that's 75x50 with sewn footbox soon. I'm very happy with the Superfly as well. I just need it to rain while I'm out there sometime. I look forward to camping at places like Sipsey soon and doing some hiking as well.
