I wish I didn't have to work today. Checking this thread is like crack! I suspect the difference is in the amount of splay. Poles need splay only enough to reliably clear shoulders and feet of hammock occupant. Bumping those poles under load could lead to buckling. But a narrower stance than you propose (if my quick reading is right) allows for more seat height.

I've recently moved and my trusty pipe stand will no longer fit in my room. I'd LOVE to DIY this stand. What are the parts you used? What is the distance between the two legs on the ground? What are you using as hinges? How are you attaching the hammock suspension to the stand?

I apologize for the many questions but I find your stand absolutely fascinating.

Happy to inspire your project. There are many possible approaches presented throughout this thread, with room for creativity to suit budget, available materials etc. I used knots, but I would not necessarily recommend to you any particular measure or material of my prototype, as my test hammocks and goals in detail differ from yours.

You may find fiberglass driveway markers suitable for tarp attachments. They will flex as the hammock ridgeline changes, as a bonus they have reflective taps on the top with a rubber cap you could glue on. They are 48" long, .375" diameter and $2.

Most who've seen it have told me to get a patent application in, and when's the Kickstarter etc. OK. Officially patent pending!"

I slept 4 nights in this working prototype before stupidly destroying it in a transport accident. It was in pricey carbon fiber tubing, which I'm certain isn't necessary to do the job. So I'll be iterating in cheaper aluminum.

Also figure it's better to have 4 separately shock-corded poles than one continuous.
I am so glad to see this coming to fruition! Well done, sir. Well done. Congratulations on the pending patent.

Nice hammock there in the video! That's a BoneFire Whisper, people, and I love it. And the Igneous Socks.

Otherwise stand would have to lift you, doing free work which doesn't exist. You'd know it was going to close up by the anchor line going slack as you attempted to get in.
You are right about the CoG. In Gadget's video you can see the issue I was talking about as he removes the RL and downward forces are changed. The RL forces the suspension to be more in line with the plane of the frame. When this is higher and inside without the RL the frames will want to close up on you. In effect the RL is forcing the CoG lower. The longer the suspension above the RL to the attachment point on the frame the more stable it will be.

I got to test out a bonefire hammock last summer and it was really nice!
    I sew things on youtube.
I don’t sew on commission, so please don’t ask. Thanks.

Well, that statement seems to run counter to my experience, so I thought I'd better get out there and test it!

As you can see, with long suspensions the untethered leg moves a lot when the hammock is loaded. This is because the weight of the legs pulls the suspension flat when there is nothing in the hammock, and when you get in the suspension takes up its angle (30 degrees) and the untethered leg has to rise.
The smaller the suspension, the less pronounced this effect is. This will become very important whe you try to rig a tarp.
