When I was a runner back in the 1980s, my running hero was a man by the name of Bill McNeil who was a member of our local running club. He was running marathons at the age of 83. I'm a bit older now and don't run any more but I think I now have a hiking hero.

Kudos to you Gandeeman for having the courage to get out into the backcountry with a 79 yo dude! He looks in **** good shape for his age.

What was your answer to his question of when you are going again?!?!

    Hey Kurt,
Your post is nice, EXCEPT for the ..."for his age"... Why add on for his age? I see lots of members have a round middle who are in their 20's or 30's.
I strongly suspect HF has a lot of member's who would have a problem hiking 15 miles regardless of age.

Ha, ha, there was only one answer...YES. We actually already have a spring/early summer trip planned for Dolly Sods in West Virginia, and he wants to go to Grayson Highlands in Virginia and camp/hike with the ponies. Neither of us have the gear for sub freezing hanging, so we'll spend the winter dialing in his gear, etc.

He actually is one of the toughest men I've ever met and I'm proud to call him a hiking partner. He's also one who does his homework. One of my sons and my son's father-in-law went along as well, both for their first time. They absolutely drove me crazy with questions because they ignored the advice I gave them about getting familiar with their gear, catching some how-to YouTube videos, etc. All the while MY father-in-law is quietly off to the side setting up his camp, and NEVER asked one question--and didn't get anything wrong. That's the kind of guy I want to go hiking with!

I see guys like your father-in-law out on long hikes to high lakes fishing, or on a slick, slippery looking road bike climbing up a mountain pass, or gliding down the slopes in late spring slush, always inspiring, and sometimes even humbling Either way it's great to see.
