I have completed my first DIY hammock!!!
I did NOT follow Speers exactly. Instead of tying a knot in the end of the hammock, I sewed 1/2" bias tape to the entire perimeter of the fabric (3 yds of ripstop 1.9) After I had finished sewing the bias tape to the edges I folded it all down to completely hide the tape and then did a double straight stitch.
I then created two "sleeves" at each end of the hammock. I TRIPLE stitched the seams and bar-tacked the corners. (see my gallery for pics)
In the sleeves I looped about 8-10 inches of spyderline. I tied it off with a square knot and a double overhand knot on each loose end.
Since I have not received my rings yet I have put a biner through the loops.
The support lines are 1.5 inch by 15 feet polyester webbing from strapworks.com
The ridgeline is some more spyderline.
So far I LOVE it. very comfy. Very light and very strong.
I can see how this is VERY addictive...I am already scheming on how to create another with some new features...Plus I need to add some velcro (hook and loop) to the sides so I can attach a bug net or garlington insulation.
Take a look in my gallery and let me know what you think.
