For good reason, the ground is where I use the bathroom. And lofted in my hammock is oh so sweet.

Other than that, It's not really UL, but hanging where there are no trees is still possible.
-First, if still hiking and come across a few hours of bald terrain, either stop at edge of prairie until next light or hike on to the next edge.
-If the trees are small, you can tie a few together to attain a strong anchor point. The only thing needed here is some cordage.
-After doing your research and you still need an alternative, you can hang from 1 tree by making a bipod and crossbar using small diameter trees. Not LNT but still an option.
-This option is very viable but not UL...take a portable stand like a set of bipods, or single pole with extra cordage and stakes to hold you. Anchor to the small trees, stake out to ground, etc.

Either way, I'm trying to stay off the ground, but I would also love to see some of those views yall have up there in the mountains.

    Good luck on your solution.
Enjoy and have fun with your family, before they have fun without you

There are no trees to hang AND it’s raining… what do you do while staying ultralight?

Also, if you have invested a great deal in UL ground dwelling, you're probably looking at that pile of gear and thinking, "Gee, maybe I can use some of this gear for a hybrid hammock/ground dweller system."
Of course some folks just can't sleep on ground, which is a dealbreaker of course and makes the entire question pointless, but some folks can and this question assumes that isn't a problem for the sake of learning.

Good point about how we can sometimes try too hard to make something work just because we can.

I've rigged a few haphazard setups between my motorcycle and a picnic table/pole/one tree/rocks before. It sometimes worked better than others, and I admit it was never as comfortable as between two good trees.

A few of those times I was on the bike, and in the rain, and had to get off the road and find a place to camp for the night. Sometimes there wouldn't be any trees per se to hang from, so I had to get creative. There is always a solution one way or another. Sometimes you just keep on going down the trail (or road).

I still like the ground. It's where most of my food comes from.

Even though I've recently adopted hanging, there's no terraphobia for me.

Sometimes, when you get to the top of the hill, trees disappear

If you know there will be areas where there are no trees then maybe carry a bivvy bag and a 3/4 length sleeping mat.
The bivvy bag allows you to sleep directly on the mat with your TQ and UQ inside for insulation.
My bivvy bag is nylon on the bottom and goretex on top (it's also 30 years old!) but you can also get all-Goretex ones.

At this stage you're just trying to get enough sleep to get you through the next day and to a place with trees so you can have a proper hang.

Good point, I think a bivvy would be the best option. Much easier than trying to setup a tarp with poles and better rain protection. But who makes a rainproof bivvy that vents? Or would it be easier to just make a mini tarp from my rain kilt over the vent? Or I guess just count on pitching the tarp and using a typical vented bivvy if that rare event ever occurs.

What's the lightest WP bivy available (that you're willing to purchase)? How much does it weight, and cost, for your peace of mind "if that rare event occurs"?
