Okay I talked with Katy Landry at the Coconino National Forest Service. She said that Freidlein is not a good option because the gate will be locked and there is very little parking at the gate. She recommended we stage out of the Kachina Trailhead and from there we can hike to wherever we decide to camp. We are allowed to camp anywhere off that trailhead. There are lots of trees and meadows - Its beautiful. Here is a link:https://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/coco...55112&actid=50 Here is a video of the Kachina Trail

She said that a FREE parking permit is required and that we also have to carry a backwoods permit, but she will allow me to pick those up for the group ahead of time and they are good for the whole year. Also, I need to push the date back one week to March 2-4. I had a trial get set the week before and I can't get out of it. Let me know if this works for you guys and gals.

Yeah, that would be me and my bad knee - maybe a mile if I can discard a lot of the stuff I usually bring.

    Artful,

We'll help you get in with whatever gear you bring. It's not a problem. By the way - look at the weather forecast. Snow is finally coming to AZ this weekend. I'm so excited!!!

I'm game, just a few things: I doubt my car will make through the forest roads that time of year, anyone game to car pool? Second, I know my gear will get me down to 10 degrees, should I prepare for more? For clothing, I don't really have a winter set, any suggestions for footwear and pants? Anything else I should prepare for that time of year?

I'm following for details. I'm finally off the road so I can make weekend hangs no problem. I've been wanting to take the Subaru up through snow so as long as we can get the gear to fit, I'm down to carpool with 2-3 people from Phoenix.
