2nd DIY UQ about to take shape!

Baffles will be completed tonight (I'm actually quite a bit faster now at sewing these) and I'll stuff it tomorrow.....anticipation.

I think I've done the differential better on this build - I'm sure it won't be perfect but it will be progress.

The photo may not show it well but it will be a wooki variant DIY.

The outer shell is about 10-15% larger in length and width...I sewed he no see um baffle strips to the outer longer shell first just straight on - then I sewed that to the inner (smaller) portion with 6-8 1 inch pleats per baffle until the end result is the end of the baffles matches the dimensions of the marks on the inner shell.

So far so good - I kinda hung it up and put some blankets in it and the material under was still loose so I think I'm good to go.

Baffle height was 3 inches after sewn...so it will prove a very warm UQ - will be my deep winter option!

Looking forward to watching this build.
Slowly plotting my own, but torn between "keep it simple" vs "what is best"...
Targeting it as a January project.
LOL - either way, it will be better than my Costco down throw.

Hey good luck! Gotta start somewhere...or just don't go down the rabbit hole - asking santa for a new sewing machine for Christmas

... Is it wrong to say that I've started to glance at them at garage/church sales - as they would likely be an upgrade from what I have...

All sewn up but for the holes to stuff it tonight - this is my favorite part

I'm feeling quite hopeful...still cautiously optimistic that I got the differential right...I think I have quite a bit of extra fabric for the outer shell...bout to find out.

How are you going to measure/stuff the down in each chamber?

I'd run accross an interesting video about using a shop-vac to blow it into the quilt..
it was called a "down eductor".
Looked like it was a lot cleaner (less free floating down) than other methods that I had looked into.

Does anyone else sew the ends of the baffles to the sides to make a box? Don't know if thats the right way or wrong way, but thats the way I didn't it.

My first UQ I sewed the boxes - now I am staring at my bear end result not bothering - and I won't bother again

I allotted for seam allowance, differential, and the added width and length for lofted "walled" sides and it is the same end result

For the head and foot end - I used to sew the ends at a 90 degree turn - this time I just had the added length and sewed it down flat - it seems to loft up all the same

Basically if you got the differential right it seems to be fine

Waiting for the down to puff up as we speak - I have no earthly clue how to calculate these odd chamber shape volumes - it's like each is an odd shaped hexagonal box and I have no idea - so...I just averaged each as a box - once I calculated one - I knew how much longer each next one was compared and added or subtracted that percentage to the next ... basically between 1.1 to 1.5 oz of down per chamber in my case - this is gonna be a super warm winter quilt for me so I'm not too too concerned if I over due it...

Once I let this fluff up I'll add a bit more if needed and then watch it again - so far so good. Fingers crossed

Watching with interest! Digging the all-black look.

How did you determine the shape of your insulated portion?

Why put darts in the baffles? I was thinking that just cutting the ends at an angle, so that the long sides would match the top and bottom layers, would be enough...but my underquilt is purely theoretical.
