Shawnee State Forest is nestled right up against the Ohio river down in southwest Ohio. Shawnee has been a place we have been putting off for awhile now – mainly due to several videos that exist showing people having terrible times there! One thing all these videos had in common is that people attempted hiking here in the peak of summer, when insects and brush are at a high point. Like Zaleski state forest, they want you staying at designated camping locations (that also include potable water).
We headed down there the first weekend in November to attempt the 26-mile southern portion of the loop. We were originally going to cover it in two nights, but this trip ended up being an over-nighter. Overall this place was beautiful! Due to the massive amounts of elevation (for Ohio) there are several scenic overlooks along the trail. Additionally, this weekend appeared to be peak leaf change which made for some truly awesome drone shots! We will definitely be coming back for the northern loop.
Overall Trip: 26.6 miles, 5000 ft of elevation gain.
