'75 - '79, all four years stateside. Last 2 1/2 years at Cherry Pt., NC.
My last year in the scouts there were about 12 of us that went on a canoeing trip in Minnesota through the boundary waters. Everyone had a hammock. There were no shortage of trees and some night had a pretty interested/elaborate overlapping tarp setup meant to keep everybody dry.
One night another guy and I used our tarps to make a shelter out of a couple of canoes.
I came along a little later, '87-'91. I was a radio operator with 3rd Recon BN in Okinawa at Camp Schwab, then went stateside to 2d Radio BN for a short while before I "indoc'ed" at 2nd Force Reconnaissance Co. I spent the rest of my time with 2nd Force at French Creek, before the disbanded the Force Recon Companies. Of course with the GWOT, they were reformed and are now called Special Operations Battalions under the Marine Corps Special Operations Command (MARSOC).

Hey...I thought this was a Boy Scouts and Hammocks thread.
Just kidding, I have the utmost respect for all of you that have served in the military for our great country.

Hello all,
As a Scoutmaster in upstate NY, I certainly have experience with over protective parents. I have been camping in a Speer for ~2 yrs. now. I have been out with the troop below 10 degrees and stayed toasty. Maybe this is rubbing off, as I now have 2 other leaders as well as 4 boys that only use hammocks. My son has gone as far as having thrown out his queen size mattress and now sleeps in his own speer in his room, as well as during his 8 weeks @ Massawepie scout camp in the Adirondacks both last summer and this one. The first sell for me was that i have had both knees replaced and find it hard to sleep on the ground.

Girl Scouts should be brought into the "fold" too.
Ever since I got into hammock a little more than a year ago, I dont think I have slept on the ground on any Boy Scout trip I was helping to lead. Just this past week my troop went up to summer camp I hung my hammock for the few days I was there as an adult leader. I was also at a LNT meeting while at camp for leaders and i mentioned using hammocks to lessen Impact in certain areas. This "new" idea got other leaders atteniton.
