    image width/height limits

I notice that limits are in effect for many formats but not for "jpg".

I think these limits should be increased or removed for the other formats.

For example, I just uploaded an image with a larger file size than necessary because I had to convert it from gif to jpg to avoid resizing.

On the contrary, I wish people would scale down (or the forum enforce a max size) those gigantic 3600x2600 pixel images (jpgs) that get posted. It would save storage space on the server and it would allow them to be loaded quicker for people that don't have the fastest internet connections to begin with.

    Just my 2 cents worth.

    Cheers

I agree and I think the two issues should be merged.

    A choice may be ideal:

    1. scale down (by default)
    2. optionally preserve the original (assuming there is good reason to do so)

In any case, lets converge on some reasonable limits; 1024 x 768 seems a good compromise.

    Or?

I habitually scale my images to 1280 x 960. There's a handy little application for Macs called "ThumbsUp" I use, it's freeware. I put the pictures I'm going to upload into a new folder, drag the folder over to the "ThumbsUp" icon, and the application creates a subfolder inside of the first with all the scaled images. Those are the ones that go to the gallery.

In the Windows world there is something similar called "Easy Thumbnails"

I suspect this had simply not been reviewed since the Gallery software was first implemented.

I just set the gallery's maximum image dimensions for all formats to 1280 x 1024.

Windows users can DL a free power toy called "Resizer." Right click on the picture(s) you want to resize and you can direct it to either create a copy or resize the original. You have predetermined sizes and a custom option.
