Yellow River State Forest - Iowa

I met sarahgirl and pizza at Yellow River State Forest Friday afternoon. We parked at the headquarters parking lot and hiked to Camp John Schultz. The original plan was to hike to Camp Glen Wendel, but we figured if anyone(Hangin'Yankee) arrived late they would be able to follow our tracks in the snow as the trails hadn't been used in a while. Unfortunately, I later found out that HY arrived at 8 p.m. and took a shortcut to Glen Wendel, completely missing our trail, and decided to camp there. Sorry Hangin'Yankee! Next time we'll stick to the plan.

Directly across from camp was a big grove of pine trees and we all just naturally headed in there to make camp. There were plenty of trees and it was a natural wind block. It was snowing lightly and the temp was in the low 30's. The remainder of the evening was spent gathering downed wood and chatting around the campfire. The low for the night was 20 with occasional gusty winds.

Saturday morning, after breakfast in the hammocks and packing up, we hiked back to the cars for water and then visited the fire tower. It's the only fire tower left standing in Iowa. Too bad it was fenced off and we couldn't climb it!

It was here that I said my goodbyes as I'd had enough cold and snow. sarahgirl and pizza hiked on into the park to find a campsite for the night and I headed down the fire road towards the cars. On the way I passed the Iowa DNR's sawmill.

On my drive home I was treated to many bald eagle sitings. In one corn field there were so many eagles that I stopped counting at 30!

I look forward to returning to Yellow River State Forest when the weather is more favorable(to me!). It's a very nice park and camping in the back country sites is free.

The weather really was good for early February, but I'm still trying to shake a winter cold/sinus thing so I decided to bail out early. You may have come up in conversation...we missed you!

    I'm ready for Spring!

I had a great time, thanks to Jerry and Sarah for great company and friendship! I can't wait for another outing. Nice photos Jerry. Here are some of mine.

After you left, Sarah and I headed to Brown's Hollow Camp. It was a big open campsite with a snowmobile trail running right through it but there wasn't too much traffic. We only saw snowmobilers run through a few times. It felt much colder Saturday night! I am not sure what the low temp was...I need to get a thermometer.

Sarah and I did a nice day hike after setting up camp at Brown's Hollow and then headed back to the campsite and ate. We heard a coyote pack howling during the night and owls hooting away. We didn't build a fire Saturday night and instead turned in real early and then woke up around 5:30am. Our gear was covered in heavy frost and we packed up in about 40 minutes and hit the trail back to the parking lot. Great weekend!

Nice pics pizza! I enjoyed the time with you and sarahgirl. Looks like she worked out a better pitch with her tarp Saturday night. I hope to see you on the trail again.

The trip was a success, other than missing " the lone wolf" aka, Hanging Yankee, aka Randy. Maybe next time Randy

It's been pretty much broken down by Pizza and JerryW so I will provide a few pics and leave it at that. I look forward to meeting up with you guys again!

p.s. I stopped in Marquette to gas up on the way home this morning and a local informed me the low saturday night was 17*, a new record for me

Asides from work, I spent my weekend kicking off my next DIY project, so the weekend wasn't a total loss.. Still, would much rather have spent the time out in the woods with y'all!

    Definitely next time!
